UK ETA Now Covers Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man

The UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system has been extended to include Jersey, Guernsey, and the Isle of Man. This means that many visitors who require a UK ETA must now also obtain one before travelling directly to these destinations.

The change is part of the UK’s wider move towards a fully digital border system and creates more consistent entry requirements across the British Isles.

What Has Changed?

From 2 April 2025, travellers who require a UK ETA must also hold a valid ETA when travelling directly to:

  • Jersey
  • Guernsey
  • Isle of Man

Previously, these Crown Dependencies operated slightly different entry arrangements. The new rules simplify travel by aligning them with the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation system.

What Are the Crown Dependencies?

Many travellers mistakenly believe these islands are part of the United Kingdom.

In reality, they are Crown Dependencies, meaning they are self-governing territories under the British Crown but are not part of the UK.

Although they are not part of the UK, they now recognise the UK ETA for eligible visitors.

Who Needs an ETA?

If you are a national of a country eligible for the UK ETA scheme, you must obtain an ETA before travelling to:

  • England
  • Scotland
  • Wales
  • Northern Ireland
  • Jersey
  • Guernsey
  • Isle of Man

Your ETA remains linked electronically to the passport used during the application.

Do I Need a Separate ETA for Jersey or Guernsey?

No.

One approved UK ETA is sufficient for travel to:

  • the United Kingdom
  • Jersey
  • Guernsey
  • the Isle of Man

There is no separate application process for the Crown Dependencies.

Can I Travel Between the UK and Jersey Without Applying Again?

Yes.

Once your ETA has been approved, you can travel between:

  • London and Jersey
  • Manchester and Guernsey
  • Liverpool and the Isle of Man

without submitting another ETA application, provided your authorisation remains valid.

How Long Is the ETA Valid?

A UK ETA is generally valid for:

  • 2 years, or
  • until the passport used for the application expires,

whichever comes first.

During this period, travellers may make multiple visits, provided each stay complies with UK visitor rules.

Are There Any Exceptions?

Irish citizens do not need an ETA.

Travellers who already hold:

  • a UK visa,
  • settled or pre-settled status,
  • or another form of UK immigration permission,

do not need to apply for an ETA.

Why Has This Change Been Introduced?

The UK Government aims to create a modern, digital border system that improves security while making travel easier for legitimate visitors.

By extending the ETA to Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man, authorities have harmonised entry requirements across the British Isles, reducing confusion for international travellers.

Final Thoughts

If you’re planning to visit Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man, it’s important to check whether your nationality requires a UK ETA before travelling. Although these islands are not part of the United Kingdom, they now participate in the UK’s electronic travel authorisation system.

Applying for an ETA in advance helps ensure a smooth boarding process and avoids unnecessary travel disruption.
